Standing Against Entropy

The laws of thermodynamics are universal. Life adheres to these laws, yet simultaneously attempts to resist their implications.

As Dawkins described, evolution constructs survival machines. Each species and organism serves as a temporary fortress against entropy. They emerge, struggle, and ultimately decline. Their remains are dispersed throughout the geological record, rendering Earth a museum of failed resistance.

Nevertheless, evolution persists. Through trial and error, it adapts, recognizes futility, yet endures. This persistence may imply an underlying purpose. It is conceivable that evolution does not defy entropy but rather serves as a mechanism through which entropy examines its own limits.

I have come to consider that evolution may function as the instrument of entropy itself. Since the universe’s inception, entropy has acted as a silent architect, fostering complexity only to dissolve it subsequently. Life, therefore, becomes entropy’s experiment—a paradoxical endeavor to approach its own origin.

At its most abstract level, evolution appears to strive toward an unattainable point: the origin of entropy, the moment when order first fractured and time commenced. Each adaptation, mutation, and transient triumph over decay may represent a step toward this primordial threshold.

These considerations are profound and challenging, and perhaps overly speculative. Regardless of their veracity, I return my focus to biology.

Organisms must manage energy efficiently to counteract entropy. Genetic mechanisms precisely regulate metabolism. However, when contemporary lifestyles inundate the body with excess calories and artificial substances, ancient conservation systems become overburdened. This imbalance leads to degeneration, chronic disease, and exhaustion.

Modernity, inspired by Du Pont de Nemours’ exhortation to “Enrichissez-vous,” has transformed the pursuit of wealth into a global doctrine. The United States amplified this ethos, subsequently influencing the world. Today, the same impetus that fostered civilization now accelerates entropy.

Medicine must reengage with the foundational principles of entropy and biology. It is imperative to learn how to restrain the unleashed disorder and to stand once more with courage against this tide.
